One Year On
I wonder how many kisses a child gives over a year?
Count up every "Blow a kiss." "Give Mummy a kiss." "Big kiss."
I wonder how many kisses a mother gives a child?
"Mummy kiss it better?" "Kiss goodbye for Dad?"
There has now been a year's worth of missed kisses.
One year on and men continue to gather in groups smoking inside the mall, smirking after being asked to stop.
One year on and fire alarms sound off in the background while security guards tell everyone to continue shopping.
One year on and there was recently a fire in Villagio with video footage showing people milling around, no-one appeared to take charge to evacuate the building.
Thirteen children. Nineteen people in total.
One year on and what have we learned?
So many missed kisses.
We will never forget.

Heartbreaking that this continues and the families still haven't received answers they deserve, 365 days later. It's just unbelievable to me.
ReplyDeleteMe too Heather. It's like a very bad dream.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's been a year already. Those poor families. How devastating for everyone.
ReplyDeleteYes, and the day looks eerily similar to last year. I think what remains to be truly devastating is that it wasn't an accident, it was negligence. Very hard to move on from.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. Just so sad. I can't imagine how those families must feel. All those missed kisses.
ReplyDeleteIt's vital that we remember them. (I think of 16 drowned children in Cochi, India, every year - one little boy told the teacher the boat was leaking, and she told him not to worry ...)
ReplyDeleteI see parents here in Romania having their kids in the car without a child car seat or even a seat belt. Smiling whilst their child stands between the two front seats. So, so sad Why don't they care?
ReplyDeleteAwful.
ReplyDeleteAustralia wasn't much different in the 70's. Every time I get frustrated about seeing little people bouncing all over the back seat I remind myself that my Grandparents rarely wore a seatbelt and as kids we never did. Things change through laws being introduced and education within the community. Let's hope it happens soon. x
ReplyDelete365 stories not read at night to the children...& so much heartache & what changes? Oh dear. I too can't believe it's been a year... Love to you dear K & friends xxx
ReplyDeleteSo sad to hear that justice has still not been served. So so sad.
ReplyDeleteIt does not seem like a year has already passed. I had only just started reading your blog when I read about this horrible tragedy and it brought tears to my eyes. It must be so hard to see that things have not changed.
